GMAC begs/gets Bank Holding Co. Status

(From http://www.bloomberg.com/apps/news?pid=email_en&refer=home&sid=aHJ5U8LG4HMY

GMAC Granted Bank Status as U.S. Seeks to Save GM
Dec. 24 (Bloomberg) -- GMAC LLC won Federal Reserve approval to become a bank holding company, enabling the auto lender to tap U.S. financial industry bailout programs and help keep General Motors Corp. in business.

The Fed is using emergency powers to grant Detroit-based GMAC’s request because of the “unusual and exigent circumstances affecting the financial markets,” according to a statement from the central bank today. To comply with rules about who can own a bank, GMAC’s majority owner Cerberus Capital Management LP agreed to distribute its stake to its investors and minority owner GM will cede all control.

The Fed
order said the plan “would benefit the public by strengthening GMAC’s ability to fund the purchases of vehicles manufactured by GM.”
Saving GMAC may improve the chances of salvaging GM, which received $9.4 billion in U.S. loans this month to stave off collapse at least until January. The package didn’t include support for GMAC, which finances about 75 percent of the inventory at GM dealers. The lender also served as a major source of loans to GM car buyers until it was frozen out of credit markets after losses totaling $7.9 billion.

GMAC’s survival “is critical to the future of the dealers,” said
Kimberly Rodriguez, principal of Grant Thornton’s automotive practice, in a Dec. 19 statement on the bailouts for GM and Chrysler LLC. The lending arms of automakers “need to be able to finance GM and Chrysler dealers, and support vehicle financing to customers in order for the parent auto companies to be viable.”

How to... and How Not to..........

Washing Your Car
If there's one lesson to be learned here it's DON'T USE DISH DETERGENT to wash your car. Dish detergents are meant to clean everything off the surface of a dish so you can, well, eat off it!
However, that squeaky clean feeling on your car after washing with a detergent is a sign your paint has been left unprotected. Best bet, use a liquid car wash from your dealer, specially formulated to dissolve dirt without compromising your vehicle's finish.

As for what type of cloth to use for washing, a 100% terrycloth towel works best, better than diapers, t-shirt, flannel and other seemingly soft fabrics.
Lastly, wash early and often to keep it clean and free of airborne contaminants.

New Factory Built

Toyota Begins North American Production of the RAV-4
December 4, 2008 - Woodstock, ON - A ceremony today at Toyota's new manufacturing facility here officially kicked-off production of the RAV4 sport utility vehicle. The plant represents an investment of CAN$1.1 billion and boosts Toyota's investment in Canada to approximately CAN$5.6 billion.

Ontario Premier Dalton McGuinty and Toyota Motor Corporation President Katsuaki Watanabe presided over the event, which was attended by local officials, the 1,200 team members who are building RAV4, and hundreds of supplier representatives.

"We started production in nearby Cambridge almost exactly 20 years ago, and this Woodstock plant shows our commitment to Canada is continuing," Watanabe said.

The Woodstock plant is the only location outside of Japan where the RAV4 is built.

Toyota (NYSE:TM) currently produces 12 vehicles in North America, including the Avalon, Camry, Corolla, Matrix, RAV4, Sienna, Solara, Sequoia, Tacoma, Tundra, Venza and the Lexus RX350. With the start-up in Woodstock, Toyota has 14 plants with the annual capacity to build approximately 2 million cars and trucks as well as engines and transmissions.

Talking About Tires !

Tires: Key Component of both Safety & Gas Mileage

Tires defintely are a key component in the maintenance of your own personal safety while driving and in the acheivement of satisfactory gas mileage.

As we all know, but seem to forget often, you must check your tires' treadwear regularly. "Cupping" of tires (outside area is worn while middle appears unworn) can create a dangerous and noisy ride. Often, in bad weather, cupped tires will fail to give you the grip you need to maintain control of the vehicle. Additionally, cupped tires will usually produce a roaring noise effect that can be irritating.

Cupping can be due to a failure to maintain the factory-recommended tire pressure for your particular vehicle in your tires. You can discover the recommended pressure from your owners manual or by asking a factory dealer of your car brand to give you this information.

With this knowledge in hand, it is then up to you to check and adjust the tire pressure often, and, at least once per month. Doing this will give you longer tire life and will help achieve the best gas mileage for your car.

And, remember to rotate the tires regularly according to the factory-recommended schedule. Again, this can be obtained from the owner's manual or the factory dealer.

Lastly, when it becomes the time to buy new tires, be sure to check what kind of tire price specials your factory dealer is offering. Right now, my dealership is offering a great tire deal which can be viewed immediately below this post!

John's Car Buying Tips

When is the Best Time to Buy?

The answer to the question depends on a lot of factors. I will try to list some of the best times for you here:

  • The first answer would obviously be ..... when your own needs or desires dictate that a new/different car would be a good move.
  • When the cost of continuing repairs and maintenance exceeds the value or expected life of the car.
  • When you trust the seller and his representatives and his representations. You can and will trust me and trust my employer, Berglund Oak Ridge Toyota!
  • When the market conditions generally favor the buyer as opposed to the seller. Now is such a time!
  • Mondays, Fridays, Saturdays, and any day near the end of a month are also good times since the dealer does more volume during those times.
  • When the automotive sales industry is in a downturn cycle, dealers are aggressively seeking your business. Again, now is such a time!
  • When interest rates on loans offered by banks and dealers are extraordinarily low. Once again, now is such a time!

The answer to the question then, logically, is that.......................

Now is the Best Time to Buy!!!

John's Service Tip #2

Changing the Engine Oil

Changing the engine oil on a regular basis is probably the number one most important thing to do in order to preserve the engine's life. Always replace the filter at the same time and use a genuine Factory oil filter for the brand of your car.

This is important whether you change the oil and filter yourself, or, if you pay someone else to do it. In the second case, you can always buy a filter from the factory dealership and then have your oil change facility do the work!

Also, keep the receipts from the dealership and garage for the oil changes. This is important so that you can prove that you have maintained the vehicle as recommended in the event you have warranty claims or even if you sell/trade your car.

The wide swings in weather for our area here suggest that an oil change every 3,000 miles or 6 months (if less than 3,000 miles) would be the best change schedule for most vehicles. Be sure to use the proper grade of oil for your car as well. This can usually be found in the owner's manual for the vehicle!

John's Car Buying Tips

Clean Cars Bring More Trade-in Value
If you're going to trade in your current vehicle, always spend some time and maybe a little money to get it "detailed". Why? Because a clean car will always make a better first impression on the dealership's appraiser than one that appears to have been neglected.
You may not have actually neglected the car, but you could give that impression depending on how dirty the car is when it is appraised. Clean out all the trash and clutter, wash thoroughly inside and out, vacuum inside, clean the windows, use air freshener inside, and put some tire shine on the tires (be sure to let the tire shine dry before driving the vehicle).
These few steps could save you hundreds in trade value! Don't fail to take advantage of this simple step.

John’s Driving Tips #1

Maximizing Your Fuel Efficiency
Maximize Your Mileage
  • When you drive a little faster, you burn considerably more fuel. Slow down and increase your fuel efficiency.
  • Once you’re out on the highway at cruising speed, use your vehicle’s cruise control. You’ll burn less fuel if you do.
  • Slow down for hills. Maintaining your speed up a hill means opening your vehicle’s throttle, which burns more gas. On down hills, use gravity to help increase speed and improve fuel economy.
  • Accelerate only when you have to, and only as much as you need to. Avoid jackrabbit starts, bring your vehicle to speed with a light right foot, and maintain smooth progress on the road.
  • For slowing down or stopping, get off the gas as soon as you can. Use your brakes when you need to, but allow the other forces working on your vehicle to help slow you down.
Whenever you can, keep your windows closed to decrease drag. For climate control, use your vehicle’s air conditioning. It’s the lesser of two evils.
  • Roof racks and rooftop containers have extremely negative effects on a vehicle’s fuel efficiency. Remove them when not in use.
